Muhammad on “The Daring Pedestrian” Part 2
By Elijah Muhammad
Messenger of Allah
It is all right for us to believe in the perfection of the mechanical
conditions of the motor vehice, but we can be gravely mistaken in the
perfection of the motor vehicle. We cannot trust pitting our lives against
mishaps for we only have one life and we live only one. Therefore, we
should try to protect our lives so we can live as long as possible.
DARING pedestrians walk out in front of moving traffic, taking open
chances with there lives and others and the propertly of others. Do not
get out of your car on the side of the oncoming traffic. Opening your car
doors on the side of moving traffic could cause damage to property and
injury. We should get out of the car on the opposite side of moving
traffic.

There are such daring people who get out of a car, opening their doors,
when an oncoming car is sometimes not more than a couple of car lengths
away. They walk across the street in front of oncoming motor vehicles. If
the man behind the steering wheel makes a mistake in changing his foot
from the gas pedal to the brake pedal, the pedestrian could be
hospitalized or killed —-all due to his daring.
SOME pedestrian are very ornery to a man of business or a man in a hurry
to get to his job or office. Often he is detained wilfully by waiting for
a slow-moving person who knows that he is in a hurry to get to his
business. This means that evil is present against the committer of evil.
So many times one can hear curses and filthy nasty names passed between
two persons in traffic because one thinks the other has erred. Often they
get out of their car, going to the one they think is at fault, cursing
and swearing , producing the spirit of attack.
THIS IS a very ugly and evil thing to do. I have heard in the streets ,
in such cases as accidents, where the man the other person thinks is
guilty says, “you don’t realize who I am.” Maybe this is an officer, a
business man, professor, a student in law, or a lawyer. This person could
even be the judge in the court. The pedestrian’s reply: “I don’t give a
‘D’ who you are.”
SUCH UGLY language passing between traffic people makes it look like a
country of savage people, all enemies of one another. More of my people
are guitlyof beginning the use of undersirable langujage in the public.
Of course, the white race’s mouth is full of curses, as the Bible teaches
us. In fact, that is where the black man got these evil practices —-
from his slavemaster and the slavemaster’s children.
LET US BE more intelligent persons. Let us display friendlier relations
towards each other. Regardless of psychological differences and ideas, we
should display humane actions to each other. Beasts of the jungles do not
act any worse than we, who, whenever we come in contact with one another,
want to show the other how evil we are and how little we care for one
another.
THE AVERAGE so-called Negro, the Lost and Found members of His Nation,
seem to love flaring up and showing off in the public his or her hatred,
dislike, unfriendliness, and lack of love for one another. They like to
fight each other in public. They like to maim and kill each other. I
think we look very bad in public, daring traffic to run over us, making
the preparations for acciddents by opening doors on the side of moving
traffic. We should exhibit more intelligence and respect for one
another—-and especially stop speaking curses and filthy words in
public. This makes us look so unwanted in intelligent societies. This
disrespect for one another shows no love for either one, black or white.
TO KEEP from disrespecting self,we should respect and show courtesy to
our known enemies, because we want to protect ourselves. Whatever the
people may be or whatever they do, it should not make us do that which is
not good for us —that which will disgrace us. Watch your step. Do not
dare step in front of moving vehicles made of iron and steel, that are
powerful enough to move forward or backwards. Do not trust the man behind
the steering wheel. He could be asleep.
HE COULD have heart failure. He could have been looking at something
other than you or me. The accident of hitting or striking us is not to
pacify or satisfy, it brings grief, sorrow, loss of money, property and
lives. Walk carefully. Look before stepping from the curb into the path
of oncoming traffic. Do not think that you have the right of way against
a faulty vehicle and against a person behind a steering wheel. He could
be unable to have a steering wheel in his hands.
